"The Memorial Wall" U.S. Military Losses Iraq and Afghanistan
Below is a link to download a list of American military
losses in the wars/ocupations in Iraq and Afhanistan.
This is the lists we use in our vigils.
How We Got These Numbers
- These lists were compiled from information on the
Iraq Coalition Casualty Count website, Department of Defense News Releases and supplemented with
information from mainstream media.
- The names of civilian employees of the military, CIA employees, and CIA private contractors
have been removed from the Department of Defense list.
- Army Specialist Ahmed Qusai al-Tai has been added. He was reported as MIA/POW on 10/23/06 in Iraq
after he was captured by the Mahdi Army.
- Army Private First Class Bowe R. Bergdahl has been added. He was reported as MIA/POW on 06/30/09
in Afghanistan after he was captured by the Taliban.
- These lists do not include the following types of deaths:
- Some of those who were medically evacuated from the combat zones following non-combat
related injuries and subsequently died from their injuries.
- Some of those who died from as result of complications from their injuries after returning to duty or being
discharged.
- Those who died directly or indirectly as a result of undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, untreated
or maltreated PTSD and/or TBI.
- The following names have been added to the list. They fall in the above categories. Their deaths have been
reported in the mainstream media but are not listed by the Department of Defense.
- John "Bill" Smith, 23, Army Sergeant, 10/01/05, Iraq - details
- Raymond A. Salerno III, 27, Army Specialist, 07/16/06, Iraq - details
- Jack D. Richards, 39, Army Staff Sergeant, 07/29/07, Iraq - details
- Gerald J. Cassidy, 32, Army National Guard Sergeant, 09/25/07, Iraq - details
- Anthony Raymond Wasielewski, 50, Army Reserve Sergeant First Class, 10/08/07, Iraq - details
- James W. McDonald, 26, Army Sergeant, 11/12/07, Iraq - details
- Henry Timothy Vakoc, 49, Army Major, 06/20/09, Iraq - details
- Jacob W. Sexton, 21, Army National Guard Specialist, 10/12/09, Afghanistan - details
- Seven names have been removed from the list at the request of the families.
