Grandparents for Peace, St. Augustine People for Peace and Justice and Central Florida Veterans for Peace Chapter 136 are three grass roots organizations who work together and speak out to promote peace and social justice. We believe that it is our moral obligation to seek peace for all who share this world and we believe that our country has the resources necessary to achieve peace through social justice, anywhere, nonviolently. We also believe that we have an obligation to teach peace to the next generation.
Every year we offer a Peace Scholarship and we invite every graduating senior in St. Johns County, public or private school, to apply. The scholarship is a cash grant to the recipient and may be used for any type of post high school education or training. The scholarship is named after Peg McIntire, a founding member of Grandparents for Peace and St. Augustine People for Peace and Justice. She was also an ardent supporter of Veterans For Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War. She spent her entire life working and speaking out for peace, social justice and the rights of the poor and of working people.
Each applicant must submit an essay on a specific topic. Information and application packets will be available from all school counselors and on this web page in January. The application deadline is March 31st.
In 2009 the scholarship value was raised to $1000.00.
The 2009 scholarship recipient is Karina Prigoda of Nease High School. Read her essay here.
The 2008 scholarship recipient was Leda Balch of St. Augustine High School. Read her essay here.
